Description

Thornage Grange is a house dating to the late 17th century, built of brick with pantile roofing. It comprises a double range with six windows, and includes a cellar to the right. The house is two storeys high and features shaped gables and gable end stacks, with the left-hand stack having been renewed.

The front of the house has a brick plinth, a moulded brick platband, and overhanging eaves with a moulded brick cornice. Vertical bands of coloured headers add visual interest. A six-panelled door is located in the fourth bay, sheltered by a flat canopy. The windows are irregularly spaced sashes with glazing bars, set within skewback flat arches and exposed sash boxes. The left-hand gable is constructed in a Flemish garden wall bond, while the right-hand gable has a platband above the eaves.

A single-storey, attic extension adjoins the right-hand side, built with a flint plinth and brickwork featuring patterned headers and a dentil cornice. A boarded door is centrally positioned, sheltered by a segmental arch, flanked by two windows and two gabled roof dormers, all with casement windows and glazing bars. This extension has its own end stack.

At the rear, a two-bay range is attached to the left of the front range, built of brick in a Flemish garden bond with some coloured headers, and with a hipped pantile roof. The rear of the front range to the right is constructed of coursed flint with a moulded brick cornice and rusticated brick quoins. The interior features an open string staircase with turned balusters and a wreathed handrail. A marble fireplace with bulbous pilasters can be found in the left-hand gable.
