Description
Hickling Hall is a house dating from around 1700, constructed of brick with vitrified headers and topped with a slate roof. It has two storeys and a dormer attic, arranged in seven bays, with the central three bays set back. The building features a brick plinth with ashlar coping and rusticated brick quoins at the corners and around the recessed central bays. The central entrance has a panelled door framed by large bolection mouldings and is topped with a broken segmental pediment. The windows are all 2-light cross casements, replaced in the 19th century, and are set under gauged skewback arches, with floating cornices above the ground floor windows. The house has hipped roofs and each side bay includes one gabled dormer, both fitted with casements from 1985. There are two chimney stacks on the side roof slopes, which were rebuilt in 1978. The rear of the house was altered in the mid-19th century with the addition of a full-length two-storey lean-to extension. Inside, the lounge features complete large framed panelling, and there is a closed string staircase with alternating flat and wavy balusters that support a moulded handrail on square newels. The roof structure consists of tie beams, collars, and two tiers of butt purlins.
