Description
Sutton Mill is a tower corn mill built in 1789 and rebuilt in 1859 after a fire. The mill features a circular, tapering brick tower that is tarred below and painted white above. It has a timber boat-shaped cap. Restoration work began in 1976. The mill has nine storeys, with an entrance located on the south side below a door in the meal floor, both sheltered by a corrugated iron and timber hood. Each floor has iron casements at the cardinal points, set under segmental arches, although three or four of these are blocked or blind on the north, east, and west sides. Above the fifth floor, there is a gallery supported by timber on iron brackets. The boat-shaped cap includes a petticoat, a fan cradle, and a 10-vaned fantail added in 1978. While the mill has stocks, it does not have sails. Inside, many of the floor timbers have been replaced. The mill's machinery includes a brakewheel, windshaft, wallower, and upright shaft that drive a great spur wheel and stone nuts to four pairs of stones located in vats. The stones are on the fifth floor and are driven from below. The governors, sack hoist, pulley drive, and enclosed stone nut frame are intact or have been repaired.
