Description

Hickling Priory is a ruinous structure that was originally a priory for Augustinian Canons, founded in 1185 by Theobald de Valoins and dissolved in 1536. The building features coursed whole flints and some brick. The remains primarily consist of the undercroft of the west range of the cloisters, which includes six bays with blocked arches to the east and interior springers for vaulting. To the north, there is a single celled space, likely used as a parlour. Northwest of this range are three bays of another vaulted room, which is now part of a derelict farm building. This range extends southward and has an ashlar string course on the west side, ending at diagonal brick buttresses. To the east, there are more substantial remains of the east walk of the cloisters, where one section of wall features three blocked doorways with brick voussoirs, possibly indicating the entrance to a chapter house. There is also evidence of 13th-century jambs.
