Description
29 to 34 Market Place is a house that includes a shop, with an additional shop attached to the east. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of red brick in header bond, topped with a black glazed pantiled roof. The building features one ground floor and three first floor sash windows with glazing bars, all set beneath flat rubbed brick arches. The shop front at the east, associated with Clayton's, has two plate glass windows framed by a simple wooden moulded architrave. There is a central six-panel part-glazed door, along with a 19th-century wooden name board on moulded pedestals displaying lettering above.
The central wooden doorcase is an impressive early 19th-century feature, complete with an architrave supported by two unfluted Greek Doric pilasters, which have capitals and an entablature. The door itself is a six-panel raised and fielded design, adorned with an early 19th-century wreath door knocker, and topped by a rectangular fanlight with cross pattern glazing bars. A rubbed brick platband runs along the first floor, and raised rusticated end quoins form the end pilasters. The eaves have been altered, and there are two end stacks.
Attached to the east is a two-storey single bay shop, which features a 20th-century ground floor tripartite sash window with glazing, and an original first floor sash window with glazing bars. The shop has two end strip pilasters and a hipped east gable, with three return windows over two storeys.
