Description
The remains of a Benedictine priory, founded around 1135, are located at Middleton Blackborough End. The structure is built from carstone rubble with stone dressings. The south gable of a large range features two substantial added buttresses and a small stone-dressed lancet window with large splays at the upper gable. The north gable and part of the foundations of a smaller range to the northeast are constructed from irregular brick, carstone, and limestone, with dressed limestone quoins. Originally known as the Priory of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Katherine, it was established as a mixed convent by Roger Scales and transitioned to a nunnery around 1200. The remains are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Norfolk 228.
