Description
The War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in the 1920s. It features a marble cross on a stone base and is located in the centre of the cemetery, with a square plan.
The memorial consists of a wheel cross on a high, tapering plinth, which rests on a marble base. This base stands on a triple-stepped stone base with low corner posts. The centre of the cross is carved with the word ‘HIS’, and around the wheel is a Latin inscription that reads ‘Pro deo et patria’. The horizontal arms of the cross display the dates ‘1914’ and ‘1919’, while the bottom of the cross shaft is inscribed with ‘To the dear memory of our fallen’. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the plinth, and the marble base features the words ‘Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.’ Additionally, the date ‘1939-1945’ and the names of the fallen from the Second World War have been added to the side of the plinth. All inscriptions are made with flush lead lettering.
