Description

The Gaywood War Memorial Clock Tower is a war memorial built in the late Renaissance style, with a square plan. It is constructed from Weldon stone and Carrstone, featuring a stage of English oak and a roof made of cedar boards.

The exterior consists of a stone clock tower with an ashlar base and a projecting moulded band, topped by three tiers of Carrstone panels on each face. The upper stage, made of English oak, has shallow pediments and displays a white clock face with Roman numerals on each side. A square-headed doorway on the southern side at ground-floor level features a wooden, three-panel door.

At the top of the structure, dark English oak forms four circular openings for the clock faces, each accompanied by a bracketed lamp. The roof, made of horizontal cedar boarding, has a steep pitch that creates a square spire. The pediments are leaded, and the roof is topped with a leaded ball finial.

On the north side of the memorial, there is a granite slab inscribed with the names of those who fell in the Great War, while a later commemorative panel on the east side honors those who died in the Second World War. The inscription on the granite slab reads: "IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-18/ (27 NAMES)." The second plaque states: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIED THROUGH ENEMY ACTION TO PRESERVE FREEDOM AND JUSTICE DURING THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM (25 NAMES)."
