Description

No. 4 King Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 16th century and has undergone later modifications. The building has a timber-framed core, but much of it is now built of brick. The front roof is covered with plain tiles, while the rear is pantiled. The ground floor was rebuilt in the 19th century, and the first floor is rendered and colourwashed.

On the ground floor, there is one Venetian window to the left of a 20th-century panelled door. The first floor features a horned sash window with glazing bars. The roof is gabled and includes one sloping dormer with a sash window. The roof structure is continuous with that of No. 6. Inside, there is an internal gable-end stack on the south side. At the rear, there is a 20th-century cross wing that is also rendered and colourwashed, with one late 20th-century casement window on each floor to the right of the cross wing.

A passageway arch is located at the front, set to the right between Nos. 4 and 6. The interior of the ground floor has been opened out and features a large bridging beam with a scarf joint. There is a chamfered bressumer over the main fireplace with roll mouldings, and the front wall has 20th-century studwork. This house was divided from No. 6 in the early 18th century.
