Description

No. 1 King Street is a house that is partly used as offices, built around 1670 for Sir John Turner. The facade dates from around 1750, while the return facing Purfleet Quay is from the early 18th century, and the interior is likely older. The building is constructed of red brick with a plain tile roof and has two storeys with three bays.

The entrance features a panelled door with panelled reveals to the right, set behind an open-pedimented doorcase supported by Ionic engaged columns. Next to the entrance is a wrought-iron lantern bracket. To the left, there are two sash windows with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches made of light red brick. The first floor has three similar sash windows. A dentil timber cornice runs below a plain parapet, and the roof is hipped.

The Purfleet Quay front, facing south, also has two storeys and features a plinth course with ashlar coping. The west extent of the original building is marked by rusticated quoins, with two sash windows on each floor, again with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. There is a platband between the floors and a double brick string course below the parapet, which extends into a single-bay extension to the west and into the north return. This extension has one sash window on each floor facing south, with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. Additionally, there is a lower two-storey late 18th-century extension to the west, which has one sash window on each floor, also with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, and a hipped slate roof.
