Description
No. 5 South Quay is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from the mid-18th century. It is built of red brick laid in header bond and features a roof covered with black-glazed pantiles. The building stands three storeys high and has a four-window range, with rusticated quoins and platbands between the floors.
On the ground floor, there are three 6/6 sash windows under gauged skewback arches, with the window to the right of the doorway having horns. The entrance door consists of six fielded panels and a seven-vaned fanlight, set within a doorcase that has engaged unfluted Ionic columns, a pulvinated frieze, and a hood with modillions. The first floor has four unhorned 6/6 sashes under gauged skewback arches, while the second floor features four horned 6/6 sashes, also under gauged skewback arches. The building is topped with a modillion eaves cornice and has a gabled roof with internal gable-end stacks on both sides.
Inside, the property has been converted into offices and is continuous with No. 6. The ground-floor principal rooms have reeded plaster cornices, and there is a late 18th-century stick baluster staircase with a ramped and wreathed handrail.
