Description

The Carnegie Library is a Grade II listed building located on London Road in King's Lynn. It was constructed in 1904 by architect HJ Green and features a combination of cut carstone, red brick, and terracotta dressings, topped with plain tiled roofs. The library was funded by public subscription, with significant contributions from Andrew Carnegie, who attended the opening on May 18, 1905.

The building has a large, fan-shaped island block designed in a Gothic style with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement. A three-storey tower at the corner serves as the entrance porch, which is accessed by a flight of steps leading to an archway. Above the entrance is a panel inscribed with the words "Public Library." The tower features a canted oriel window with an enriched soffit, cusped lights, and crenellations, while the parapet is also crenellated and supported by polygonal clasping buttresses.

The one-storey wings that abut the main structure have Gothic rampart parapets, which include inscribed terracotta tablets displaying the names of various authors. The windows consist of two- and three-light transomed casements with cusped lights, and stepped buttresses rise above the parapet between the windows.
