Description
London Road Methodist Chapel is a Primitive Methodist Chapel built in 1858 by J.A. Hillam. It features a red brick structure with a gault brick facade and stone dressings, topped with a slate roof. The facade faces west towards the street and consists of two storeys divided into three bays, with the central bay projecting forward. At each corner, there are stone rusticated quoins. The central arched double doors are framed by a rusticated surround and topped with a moulded hood supported by console brackets. On either side of the central doors are subsidiary round-arched doors, each with hoods on scrolls. A string course runs between the two floors. The first floor showcases two paired lancets, separated by a three-light stepped lancet. Above this, a shaped gable features a clock face, while the roof is gabled and hipped to the west. The returns of the building have five-window bays on both storeys, although the central upper window is blind. The windows have glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, and there is a two-storey hipped rear extension.
Inside, the gallery is supported by circular iron columns with fillets at the cardinal points and features Corinthian capitals. The gallery sweeps to the west side and is adorned with an interlace balustrade.
