Description
The Tilney St Lawrence War Memorial is a grey granite structure situated in the churchyard of the Church of St Lawrence, which is a Grade II*-listed building. The memorial features a tall wheel-head cross atop a tall pedestal, with a three-stepped base made from a different material. The front face of the memorial is polished, while the sides remain rough-hewn. Surrounding the cross are eight low pyramidal granite posts that rest on a kerb, connected by two rows of barley twist iron rails. The pedestal and its base display inscriptions in incised lettering.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ (21 NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945." The names of nine individuals who served in the Second World War are listed on the front face of the pedestal's foot.
