Description
The Terrington St John War Memorial Cross is a stone memorial located in the churchyard of the Church of Saint John, which is a Grade I-listed building. It is situated near The Vicarage, a Grade II-listed structure, and several other Grade II-listed monuments within the churchyard.
The memorial features a stone cross pattée that rises from a heavily moulded collar on an octagonal cross shaft. This cross shaft is set upon a square pedestal, which has dentilated upper edge moulding and a shallow foot, resting on a three-stepped octagonal base.
The pedestal displays inscriptions on a polished stone plaque. The main dedicatory inscription, which is incised and painted, reads: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE WARS/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
There is also a later white stone plaque attached to the top of the original inscribed lettering that provides historical information, but this addition is not considered to have special interest. The significance lies in the original structure of the memorial itself.
