Description
The West Acre and District War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of millstone grit with a flint base. It features an ornate fleur-de-lis wheel-head cross atop a tapering square shaft, which rises from a square plinth on a round two-stepped base. The first step consists of four splayed stones, and the entire memorial stands on a round sloping base made of flints.
The original inscription on the plinth is currently not legible, but it is evident that the front face had a dedication, while the other faces were inscribed with names. The rear face is somewhat more readable, displaying the years 1939 - 1945 followed by the word "NAMES."
Attached to the front of the memorial is a bronze dedicatory plaque that reads: "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM WEST ACRE, EAST WALTON AND GAYTON THORPE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE TWO WORLD WARS OF 1914 – 1918 AND 1939 – 1945. THEIR NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON A MEMORIAL IN THE CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS, WEST ACRE."
