Description
Narford Hall is a mansion built by Andrew Fountaine of Salle, Norfolk, between 1690 and around 1704. It was significantly enlarged from around 1830 under the direction of Andrew Fountaine. The building is constructed of carstone with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs. The original block is located to the southwest and is mainly two storeys high with attics. The seven-bay facade of the original block features sash windows with glazing bars, which are likely 18th-century replacements, and are surrounded by stone eared architraves. The central three bays are slightly advanced, pedimented, and faced with ashlar. The former entrance has an aedicule with an open-topped segmental pediment supported by a pair of columns with carved capitals. Inside, there is a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. The exterior includes rusticated quoins, a plain platband, modillion cornices, and a balustraded parapet. The hipped roof has four dormer windows beneath segmental pediments. The enlargements by Andrew Fountaine include a stone tower porch with a cupola on the northeast side of the original block and extensive additions that reflect the style of the original building. The interior features a cycle of paintings by Antonio Pellegrini, a staircase dated 1704 with twisted balusters, and various early 18th-century plaster ceilings and fireplaces. Access to the land has been limited, resulting in a minimal description.
