Description
The Titchwell War Memorial is a rectangular structure made of grey granite, erected around 1920 to honor those who fell in the First World War. It features a Celtic wheel cross with interlace carving on its front (south) elevation, which stands on a tapered granite plinth and base, set upon a concrete platform. The front (south) elevation of the plinth is inscribed with the words: ‘IN MEMORY OF TITCHWELL MEN / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / (6 NAMES) / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS’. Surrounding the memorial is a low twisted rail, supported by wrought-iron bars at each corner. The memorial is prominently located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I listed building, to the east of the path from Church Lane.
