Description
Old School House is a house located 30 metres due south of the Church of St. Mary in Brancaster, with a datestone indicating it was built in 1593. The building features squared coursed clunch, some flint, and brick dressings, topped with a red pantiled roof. It has two storeys. The rear facade facing the road includes four blocked brick dressed windows and two 20th-century casements with glazing bars, partly set in earlier brick dressed openings. On the first floor, there are three blocked long and low window openings, one larger blocked window, and two casements with glazing bars set in earlier openings. The house has been heightened, likely in the 19th century, and has a roof with two end stacks and one ridge stack. At the north-west corner, there is a chamfered corner with brick dressings, and the west gable features two upper brick dressed and carstone infilled lozenge panels, with a stone date plaque reading "R.S. 1593." The east gable has brick dressings, one blocked brick dressed window, and a brick carstone infilled lozenge at the apex. The building is included primarily for its group value with the church.
