Description

Little Thetford War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely dedicated by 1925, with additional names added after the Second World War. It is made of limestone and is located in the cemetery at the northern end of Little Thetford village, positioned on the west side of the main pathway and surrounded by concrete paving slabs.

The memorial features a Celtic wheel cross on a low shaft made of roughly dressed stone. It stands on a tapering rectangular plinth that is raised on a square stone step. The south face of the cross includes a central boss and ring with a raised band that runs across each of the four arms, which have raised edges and each feature a carved triquetra. The sides and rear of the cross, as well as the shaft and plinth, are roughly dressed and lack decoration.

On the south side of the plinth, there is a smoothly dressed panel in the center that bears the inscription in pinned lead letters in an angular, stylised script: ‘ERECTED / TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918’. Below this inscription are 12 names, followed by the phrase: ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS’. Additionally, on the front face of the step, the years ‘1939 – 1945’ are inscribed, followed by two names.
