Description

A row of six memorial stones, dated between 1747 and 1833, is located between 7 and 11 metres south of the nave of the Church of St. John in Terrington St. John. These memorials are made of limestone and feature various designs.

The first stone is rectangular with a segmental set-back top and has an oval inscription panel below carved floral and vegetative scrolls. The second stone is also rectangular, featuring a coved set-back segmental top, with a pair of Ionic columns framing a bowed circular inscription panel that is supported by a moulded entablature. Rosettes fill the spandrels of the inscription panel, which is topped by a winged cherub.

The third stone has a scrolled top that drops to lugs on either side, with a bowed oval inscription panel below a carved winged cherub head. The fourth stone is identical to the third. The fifth stone is rectangular with a coved segmental set-back top, where a pair of Ionic columns supports a moulded architrave that frames a fielded square inscription panel. Above the entablature are two winged cherub heads. The sixth stone is rectangular with a segmental top, featuring an inscription panel surrounded by carved foliage in low relief.
