Description

Church Farmhouse is a late 16th-century brick farmhouse, divided into two properties in the mid-20th century. It is located on Fleggburgh Road in Rollesby. The building has a T-shaped plan, with a cross wing set to the north.

The west front is two storeys high and features a plinth course. There are two doors in the main range; the left door is contained within a moulded 16th-century timber surround, with a planked door protected by a flat, leaded hood. The door to the right is a 20th-century addition, with a hood on brackets. The entire facade is decorated with brick diamond diapering in burnt headers. A 3-light 18th-century casement window sits between the doors, and there is a 20th-century sash window to the right. Blocked windows, each with a hood mould, are located to the left and right of the original 16th-century door. The first floor has three 2- and 3-light 18th-century casements and a mezzanine window lighting the staircase, all set within reduced openings. The gabled roof has a rebuilt ridge stack over the right-hand door and an external gable end stack to the south, the flue of which was rebuilt in the 20th century. A blocked first-floor window, with an ovolo mullion and a hood on labels, is present in the south gable, supported by a diagonal sloping buttress.

The rear of the main block, also two storeys high with a dormer attic, has a kitchen outshut with a catslide roof that abuts the cross wing. To the left of the outshut is another 20th-century addition. The first floor has two 2-light 18th-century casements, one of which partially obscures a 4-light ovolo mullioned window. There are two dormers in the roof under eyebrow thatching.

The west side of the gabled cross wing is constructed with burnt brick diapering. It has two 20th-century casements to the ground floor and one each to the first floor and attic, all within reduced openings. The gable head is supported by moulded kneelers. The north return of the cross wing features two large, stepped external stacks. The western stack has a rebuilt flue, while the eastern one was completely rebuilt in the mid-20th century, along with the adjacent wall and the eastern gable of that wing.

The interior is largely simple and altered. A doorway within the ground floor cross wing has roll-moulded jambs on tall bases. A similar door at the rear leads to the scullery. A lobby entrance plan is evident in the south part of the house. Bridging beams on the ground floor and first floor are chamfered and feature stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A 16th-century plank back door remains. The roof of the main range has tie beams, two tiers of butt purlins, collars, and straight wind bracing. The cross wing roof is similar, but with some curved wind bracing.
