Description

Ye Olde Monastery is a Grade II listed house, divided into two, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of red brick and covered with pantiles, featuring an 'L'-shaped plan across two storeys and attics. The facade consists of five bays, with a brick plinth and string courses at both the first and attic floor levels. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and segmental brick arches. There is an inserted door on the extreme left and a central six-panel part-glazed door, which is topped by a moulded broken cornice supported by elaborate carved consoles that spring from brick pilasters with small abaci. The building has a timber, decorated modillion cornice and parapet eaves, with moulded brick kneelers at the west and end stacks. There is also moulded brick decoration between the first-floor windows.

The northwestern rear range is partly original, featuring a brick plinth and casement windows, while the northeastern range has west lean-to additions. Scattered doorways and casement windows, all with segmental brick arches, are present throughout. Inside No. 4, there is a dog-leg stair with a moulded handrail and shaped balusters. In No. 3, an open fireplace is located on the ground floor, along with a shouldered chimney piece that has a pulvinated frieze to the cornice, and a stopped and chamfered axial beam.
