Description
The stables at Crabgate Farm date from the mid 17th century to the early 18th century, with some parts rebuilt in the 19th century. They are timber-framed with brick infill, a brick wall at the rear, and a pantile roof. The building is single storey with an overloft, featuring two stable doorways that lead to the rear yard, a single window, and a pitching hole for the loft facing the road.
Inside, there is a contemporary partition with a narrow doorway between the two stables. The right-hand side (south) has tack pegs on either side of the door and a hay chute that feeds into racks along the end wall. The roof has five bays with chamfered double purlins, tie beams supported by jowled posts, and principal rafters that do not align with the tie beams. There are half-lapped dovetailed collar beams, with replacement collars bolted to the principals, and straight braces from the jowl posts to the tie beam soffits.
Additionally, there is a single storey stable to the south and riding horse stables with 19th-century fittings to the north. Stables from this period that still have their original fixtures are rare, making this timber-framed example, despite its alterations, an important historical structure.
