Description

The Old Workhouse Cottages are a group of four terraced cottages dating to the early 17th century, with alterations from the early 18th century and a western extension added in the 18th century. They are constructed of red brick and have pantile roofs. The cottages are 1½ storeys high, with single-storey rear outshuts. The eastern gable features 17th-century diaper brickwork. The eastern half of the building has a moulded string course at first floor level, and shows evidence of altered doors and windows. Towards the centre, 19th and 20th-century windows have been inserted into the original openings. The western half has 20th-century doors and windows in original openings, with brick tumbling in the western gable. Seven wedge dormers are visible, along with casement windows with glazing bars. The building has end and two axial stacks. A brick in the eastern wall is dated 1714 and is inverted. A ground floor room on the east has a large open fireplace with a shortened bressumer at the southern end. It also features moulded joists and a stopped-chamfered spine beam. The roof is a staggered butt purlin structure.
