Description

Hackford Hall is a farmhouse primarily dating from the early 19th century, but it has a core that dates back to the early 17th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed red brick and covered with pantiles. It has a 'U'-shaped plan and stands at 2½ storeys tall.

The east facade features five bays arranged as a, b, b, b, a, and includes a central prostyle portico in the Tuscan order, which is stuccoed and supported by six paired columns and two outer piers, topped with a heavy entablature and cornice. The south range retains characteristics of the original Lobby Entrance type house and contains 50 mm bricks laid in English Bond in its south and east walls. The south elevation has four windows, with the one opposite the off-centre axial stack being blank. The rear section of the south range extends westward and features a curved gable with polychrome brickwork from the late 19th century.

The windows are sash style with glazing bars, stone sills, and segmental gauged brick arches. The north facade has four windows and an off-centre entrance door. Within the courtyard, there is a lean-to and a flat-roofed kitchen extension. The eaves are supported by paired shaped brackets. The roof is hipped to the northeast and southeast, with western gables that feature brick tumbling-in. The building has gault and red brick axial stacks. There is a 17th-century door and frame leading to the cellar, along with a 17th-century winding stair located against the south wing's axial stack. Additionally, there is a fine early 19th-century cantilevered geometric stair with a wrought iron balustrade and bracketed steps.
