Description

Nelson's Restaurant is a former shop, now a restaurant and dwelling, dating from the 17th century, with alterations and extensions in the 18th and later centuries. A fragmentary timber frame is visible in the rear wall of the main block. The building has a colourwashed brick facade and pantile roofs.

The front of the building features two storeys and four bays, dating to the early 19th century. It has 2-light and 3-light mullion and transom windows. A particularly wide boarded door is located at the south end of the facade, with a part-glazed panelled door beneath a cambered arch in the centre, and an early 19th-century shop front with a central glazed door at the northern end. The shop windows have segmental heads and cusped fan spandrel motifs. The north gable has a tumbled-in detail. The building has one off-centre axial stack and one northern gable-end stack. Later lean-tos have been added to the rear.

Inside, a notable feature is a fine early 19th-century reeded fire surround with corner roundels. Several raised and fielded panelled doors are also present.
