Description
The Hilborough War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, located in the churchyard to the west of the tower of the Church of All Saints, which is listed as Grade I.
The memorial features a limestone wheel-head cross on a tall shaft with a molded foot. The cross and shaft are set into the west face, and the cross-head has the monogram HIS carved in relief at its center, with a carved roundel on each of the three cross arms. The shaft rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth that sits on a block base. The plinth displays inscriptions and names in incised lettering.
The main inscription on the front (west) face reads: "SACRED TO THE UNFADING MEMORY OF THE EIGHT YOUNG MEN OF HILBOROUGH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The names of the nine individuals are listed on the north and south faces of the plinth. The original eight names include the serviceman’s regiment and the date and location of death, while the additional name added later only includes details of his regiment.
The dedication for the Second World War is located on the east face of the plinth and reads: "HILBOROUGH & BODNEY SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1939 – 1945" followed by five names.
