Description

Elm Cottage is a cottage that dates from the early 17th century and has undergone later alterations. The structure features a partly visible timber frame, with a north gable-end made of brick and flint. There is a colourwashed brick addition and partial re-facing, with thatch and corrugated tile roofs. The original building is arranged in an L plan, with a 19th-century brick side addition to the west and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension to the east.

The cottage is one storey high with an attic in the earlier part. The north gable-end, dating from around 1700, displays a diaper pattern in brick and tumbling-in, and includes a single inserted window. The south facade features a central boarded door, two 19th-century three-light casement windows, and one single-light casement. There are also two eyebrow dormers with leaded glazing and metal casements.

Internally, the west side has two 19th-century three-light casement windows, while the north side has one two-light casement beneath a skewback arch that is contemporary with the 19th-century extension. This extension is two storeys high, with the north facade showcasing a panelled door and a bay of two-light casement windows, all set beneath skewback arches. The east facade has a three-light window beneath a segmental arch and a two-light window above, along with a single circular window on the upper floor, which is a characteristic feature of Hilborough estate cottages.

Inside, there is a pair of jointed crucks with elbowed uprights in the roof, and one room features angle rolls to the common joists. The cottage is associated with the Hilborough Hall Estate.
