Description

Hilborough Mill is a former watermill and miller's house, built in 1819, as indicated by a datestone featuring the initials R.C., possibly referring to Ralph Caldwell. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick, while the miller's house is made of flint with brick dressings, topped with a slate and pantile roof. The structure has a long rectangular plan, with the miller's house located in the westernmost bay. It is two storeys high with an attic and features eleven bays of 2-light casement windows set beneath skewback arches with cambered soffits. Some of the windows are blind or boarded over. There is one raised and fielded panelled door, along with a weatherboarded lucam that has two boarded doors below it, and a second lucam on the east side. The rear facade displays scattered fenestration, including one gabled dormer and two sloping dormers. The miller's house is adorned with dentil cornices and has an axial stack. To the north, there is a single-storey stable wing. The mill's machinery is largely intact, featuring a cast iron waterwheel (though the paddles are missing), a pit wheel, wallower, stone nuts, tentering gear, and governors on the ground floor. The first floor contains three sets of stones, with their casings and hoppers still in place. The roof houses bins, chutes, and screening machines. The mill is part of the Hilborough Hall Estate.
