Description
Fulmerston's Almshouses are a group of four almshouses, now used as sheltered housing, built in 1610 and remodelled in the late 19th century, with restoration completed in 1968. The structure features cut and galleted flint, ashlar blocks, and stone quoins, with red brick dressings around the windows and doors. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and the building is one storey high with a symmetrical façade.
There are two doors in the center and one at each end of the elevation, each featuring a 19th-century four-plank door with cusped arches. Between the doors, there are four three-light trefoil-headed lancet windows with diamond-leaded glazing. The doors and windows have chamfered brick surrounds and hoods supported by plain labels.
Between the central pair of doors are two plaques; one commemorates the foundation in 1610 under the will of Sir Richard Fulmerston, while the other displays a text from Hebrews 12, 14. The building has a gabled roof with heavy brick kneelers, a central twin diamond-flued ridge stack, and single diamond-flued internal gable-end stacks. The south gable head features the bed stone of a sundial. The interior has not been inspected.
