Description

The barn, located 110 meters southeast of Old Buckenham Castle Keep, was originally St. Mary's Chapel in the outer bailey of the castle. It dates from the mid-12th century and was converted into a barn in the mid-16th century following the Dissolution. The structure is built of flint with brick facing on the south and east walls, topped with a slate roof. It features full-height central double doors on the north side that are dressed with brick, along with brick quoins and some ashlar dressing. The roof line on the west wall indicates that there was an abutting structure, possibly a priest's house, as the remaining structure is likely the nave of the chapel. There is a blocked arched 13th-century door to the lower left of the west wall, with some jamb fragments set into the upper arch. Inside, there is a splayed round arched door in the south wall from the 12th century, with ashlar voussoirs now blocked. To the left of this door is a large splayed blocked window, probably from the 15th century. To the right of the door, under the eaves, is one splayed square window opening, likely from the 12th century. The roof, dating from the 18th century, consists of tie beams, collars, and two tiers of staggered butt purlins. The barn is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with the County number 89.
