Description
The remains of a castle keep, dating from the 1140s and possibly completed by 1146, are located in Old Buckenham. The structure features whole coursed flint walls and has a circular plan with an internal cross wall that runs from the north-east to the south-west. The walls of the keep survive to the first floor level of this two-storey building. The entrance arch to the ground floor is from the 15th century, but there is an original pointed arched doorway through the cross wall. This keep is likely the earliest circular keep in England.
Additionally, there is a moat bridge from the 13th century made of ashlar, flint, and brick, with some of the brick dating to the early 15th century, while most is from the 19th century. The bridge features a parapet over an arched opening. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with the county number 8.
