Description
The garden walls and gates on the west side of Hatfield House, which connect to The Palace, feature a rectangular plan and date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The east side is early 17th century but was reduced in height in the 19th century when a central gate and two sets of statues were added. The statue groups, made of artificial stone by Bubb in 1823, are located in rectangular recesses at each end of the wall and were originally from the Royal Exchange. The south side has 18th century wrought iron double gates with scrolled side panels and an overthrow, supported by piers topped with stone ball finials. The northern gates were relocated to the Cecil burial ground in St Ethelreda's churchyard. A tall 18th century wall extends from the south to the west sides and returns on the north.
