Description
The gates, walls, and pavilions on the south side of Hatfield House are a notable feature dating from the early 17th century, with restoration occurring around 1845. The Second Marquess of Salisbury constructed the gates and walls for Queen Victoria's visit in 1846. The low red brick walls have a trellis pattern in the upper halves, which includes a V motif. The single-storey corner pavilions are distinguished by stone quoins and architrave bands above the trellis-work windows. Stone vases adorn the strapwork parapets. The central double gates on the south side are embellished with cast iron foliage and grotesque ornamentation. There are also outer single gates framed in cut brick surrounds, set within a screen of trellised brick panels featuring quatrefoils. Four red brick gate piers with stone quoins support the structure, and there is a stone scrolled overthrow above the central gates.
