Description
The garden walls on the east side of Hatfield House were likely built around 1845 for the second Marquess of Salisbury, although they follow the design of the Jacobean gardens created in the 17th century by Solomon de Caus, John Tradescant, and Montague Jennings. The walls enclose the upper garden and three sides of the lower garden, which contains The Moze. The lower halves of the walls are made of red brick, while the upper parts feature trellis brickwork. There are moulded courses and cornices, and the trellis work displays alternating sections of diamond and oval patterns, separated by panelled piers. The steps leading from the upper to the lower garden consist of two flights, and the belvedere has been modified to include two flights instead of the earlier single flight. The walls are included for their group value.
