Description
The walls and gates on the north and west sides of Hatfield House were built in 1845 and the late 19th century by the second and third Marquesses of Salisbury. They are constructed of red brick with stone dressings and some terracotta ornamentation. On the east and west sides near the house, there are pairs of octagonal gate piers that support cast iron double gates, which are identical to those found on the south courtyard. The walling to the north of these gates is from the late 19th century but is designed similarly to the wall on the south side of the house. On the north side, two sections of wall create three wide entrances to the courtyard, which are flanked by terracotta ornamental posts featuring motifs of storks and rams' heads. Additionally, a further stretch of similar wall connects the north and south courtyard walls on the west side of the house.
