Description
The gatehouse to Hatfield House, which includes a porter's lodge and two adjoining cottages on the south, dates back to around 1480 and was originally part of the west entrance range to Bishop Morton's Palace. It features red brick construction with some 15th-century diaperwork and a plain tile roof. The east elevation facing the courtyard has a four-centre arched coach entrance near the right end, supported by a heavy moulded beam and chamfered spandrels. Above this entrance is a four-light wood-frame leaded window from the 17th century. Flanking this are single 15th-century lights with moulded arched surrounds on the first floor. The left side of the range has two projecting gable ends, each with a one-window design and three-light wood casements on both the ground and first floors. The south and north ends of the range feature early 17th-century crow-stepped gables. The left return includes a fine late 18th-century flush panel door with a moulded frame and a heart-patterned glazing-bar fan. The eight-window elevation facing Fore Street has a 17th-century flush wood cross bar window above the arch, with mainly 19th-century restored Tudor windows. There is also a single 15th-century one-light window on the left end of the first floor. Additionally, the first-floor room above the arch contains a 16th-century tempera painting of a lion hunt, which is now covered over.
