Description
The Administration Block at Shrodell's Wing, Watford General Hospital, dates from 1838 and later, originally serving as the Watford Union Workhouse. The low front range was demolished in 1950, leaving an open courtyard plan. The building is constructed of brick and consists of part 2½ and part 2-storeys, topped with slate roofs that are hipped on the taller blocks.
The central section features a 5-window range with a square wood ventilating turret on the ridge, and the three central bays project slightly. The first and ground floors have glazing bar sashes set in gauged brick flat-headed surrounds, while above, there are three small arched windows grouped together in the center. The outer bays contain six-pane windows. A later addition is a brick porch with a pediment supported by pilasters.
The road front pavilions have been altered from their original design, which included a triple sash window facing the courtyard and a blank triple window on the first floor facing the road, along with a blank triple arcade in the attic on the road front. The two-storey connecting wings are simpler, featuring ground floor sashes and upper casement windows. Some alterations have been made, including two ground floor three-sided bay windows on the left side.
