Description

The Church of St Matthew, built in 1880 by W H Syme of Watford, is a red brick Gothic church located on Eastbury Road in North Oxhey. It features a north-west tower with a spire, a nave with aisles, and a chancel that has a five-sided apse, along with small north and south transepts. The roofs are covered with plain tiles. The church has lancet windows, with single windows in the aisles, double windows in the clerestory, and triple windows in the transepts. The apse has long single lights, and there are moulded brick hood-moulds and strings, along with some pressed brick ornamentation.

The tower includes two-light bell-openings and a broach spire, constructed from brick with three stone bands. Inside, the church has open timber roofs, with principal arch braces supported by wall-shafts in the nave and similar shafts in the brick chancel arch. The chancel roof is boarded, and there is a pressed brick frieze below the clerestory.

Notable interior features include an early 20th-century carved oak pulpit, lectern, screen (now located at the west end), and altar rails. In the north aisle, there is an original elaborate painted wood reredos from around 1880-90 by J E K Cutts, which has been moved from the chancel. The south transept contains luminous stained glass from around 1916 by Carl Parsons. The church was built by the builder on May 29, 1880.
