Description

Maple Lodge is a house dating from the early 19th century, with surviving elements of a 17th-century building. It may have originally been timber-framed. The walls are of stock brick, incorporating some earlier red brick, with areas of tile hanging. The roof is covered in Welsh slate. Constructed on a double-depth plan, the house has two storeys and a two-window front. A central entrance is set within reveals, framed by fluted pilasters and a projecting, moulded cornice. The ground floor has 16-pane sash windows, while the first floor window on the right is a 16-pane sash and the window on the left, towards the earlier part of the building, is smaller, with 12 panes. All windows have gauged brick, flat arched heads, and are set in reveals. The eaves are boxed, and the roof is hipped to the right. A tile-hung gable end on the left reflects the earlier 17th-century construction, and part of the original roof structure remains within the left bay. The front of the house has an earlier red brick plinth. The left return features sashes with first-floor casements facing the front, along with a stack in the central valley. The right return has ground-floor French windows towards the front, with other windows being 16-pane sashes, and a ridge stack. A rear addition to the right has a stepped parapet, and a continuous lean-to addition extends to the rear. The interior features a paved entrance hall, reeded and architraved doorcases, and panelled doors.
