Description
The Old Maltings, a former maltings building, dates from the early to mid-17th century. It has been converted into a house and community hall and was restored and partly rebuilt in 1975. The building is timber-framed and partially brick-cased, with some imitation timber framing, and has a machine-tiled roof. There are six bays in total. The right-hand gable end displays exposed timber framing with close studding, passing braces, jowled posts, and struts to the collar clasping the purlins. The front elevation has a red brick ground floor with a door and three 2-light 20th-century casement windows. The first floor has close studding, while two bays to the left are all brick with first-floor imitation framing, leaded-light casements, and an entrance. A cross-axial brick stack is located to the left where the hall joins the house. The roof is hipped on the left side. A gabled porch provides access to the left end of the building.
To the rear and to the right stands a 19th-century two-storey brick stable block, which originally served Abbot's House. It features dentilled eaves and a gabled loft door. A single-storey weatherboarded and brick outshut is located at the rear. In the angle between the maltings and the stable block is an 18th-century kiln, constructed of brick, square in plan, with a door and a loft entrance, and a pyramidal tiled roof with a conical cap.
The interior features arched braces to the tie beams and curved braces in the walling. A gallery was inserted during the 1975 restoration.
