Description
The Chequers Public House and Restaurant is an inn that dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick casing and weatherboarded gable ends. The building has a steeply pitched thatched roof, with an off-centre chimney and an additional chimney at the northern end. It is two storeys high and has four 19th-century casement windows. The ground floor includes two canted bays, with the right bay containing the entrance door. The structure has five bays in total, with the two on the south side being a later extension.
Inside, four trusses are visible, featuring tie beams, collars, and queen and king posts. The front passage wall is timbered and of light construction, which continues to the first floor. The northern bay of the building is slightly recessed and may have been rebuilt in the 18th or 19th century. There is a 20th-century single-storey outshut on the south side, along with 19th and 20th-century rear extensions that have slate roofs.
