Description
The South-West Block on the south side of Abbey Gate at St Albans School is an early 20th-century building that stands three storeys tall. It is constructed of flint with brick quoins and features stone dressings around irregularly placed windows. The roof has a varied line with gables and a mansard design, including dormers, all covered in slate and pitched moderately high. The windows consist of one-, two-, and three-light casements, many of which are topped with stone hoodmoulds, and some have traceried, stone-blocked centre lights. To the right, there is a wide, canted bay with a battlemented parapet that mirrors a similar parapet on one section of the roof. The entrance is located under a four-centred arch adorned with coats of arms in the spandrels. The Abbey Gate and the buildings of St Albans School are part of a cohesive group.
