Description
The Church of St Mark is a parish church built in 1845, designed in a Norman and early Gothic style influenced by North Italian architecture. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The church has a single aisle and an apsidal eastern end, along with a northwest campanile tower topped by a sprocketed spire.
The large gabled north porch is supported by heavy stone columns and includes an open staircase leading to the tower. The nave contains five round-headed lancet windows on the south side, while the apse features three lancets with inset stone colonnettes that have cushion capitals. The capitals of the porch are intricately leaf-carved and support roll-moulded arches. The open staircase is adorned with thin colonnettes.
The campanile is reinforced with angle buttresses at its lower section and has small first-floor lancets with colonnettes, along with a miniature arcade above. The second stage of the tower includes clock faces, while the third stage features three colonnettes and twin-louvred belfry lights. The eaves are decorated with a lozenge pattern and a wide soffit. The west window is plate traceried.
Inside, the apse is designed as a niche with a ribbed vault, and the walls have panels alternating with lancets. A west gallery is supported by thin cast iron columns.
