Description
Nos. 3, 5, and 7 French Row are a range of buildings dating from the 14th or early 15th century, with significant additions from the 17th century at the rear. The buildings are two stories tall with an attic, topped by a high-pitched tiled roof featuring two cross gables that project forward from the walls. The first floor has a deep overhang supported by arched brackets.
The left gable includes an attic and first-floor window above a carriageway, which has close studding to the right and more open studding on a raised ground cill to the left. The central section is two stories high with almost continuous glazing on the first floor. The right gable has one first-floor window set in a slightly projecting box frame. All windows have been replaced with casements, and there are small shop fronts on the ground floor.
At the rear, the 17th-century house has a high-pitched, hipped, swept tiled roof, an eaves cornice with square medallions, and an overhanging first floor supported at the back by a grotesque carved bracket over fluted pilasters. The windows in this section have transoms but feature modern glazing. Inside the rear building, there is a stone fireplace with a Tudor arch, indicating that an earlier structure may have existed on the site. There is also a long, gabled rear extension to the right bay. Nos. 3 and 5 occupy the ground floor, while No. 7 occupies the upper floors, accessed through a door to the left of No. 9. Additionally, No. 7 extends into the upper storey of No. 9. The buildings at Nos. 1 to 7 (odd) and No. 9 are recognized as a group.
