Description

Toll Cottage is a 17th century or earlier timber-framed house featuring a high-pitched, tiled roof and later alterations. The main front faces the garden. Although the house has been divided, it is currently one property. The left section is faced with a mix of brown and blue bricks, accented with red brick dressings. It has 18th century three-light and one-light casement windows with glazing bars in flush, box frames on the first floor. There is a brick band at the first floor level and traces of an earlier jettied front. The ground floor has gauged, segmental brick arches over the door and window, with a later one-light window inserted. A brick plinth supports the structure, and a gabled hood on curved brackets is above the door. The right section features a plastered first floor and a weatherboarded ground floor, with a two-light casement window on the first floor and a replaced four-light window on the ground floor. There is a one-storey modern extension to the right. The gable end faces the street and has a wide chimney over a pent-roofed brick bake-oven, which contains an inglenook fireplace. Inside, several studs and beams are exposed, including tie beams in the first floor ceilings. Additionally, there are two adjoining gabled rear extensions that are brick-faced.
