Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1825 by George Smith. It is an early example of the Norman revival style. The church features a painted stucco facade, which was removed during repairs in 1987, and red brick side elevations. It has a slate roof and a single aisle with a two-storeyed gabled front. The front is divided into three sections with shallow stepped buttresses, and the central buttresses once had pinnacles. The entrance door is round-arched and approached by a flight of steps, flanked by narrow blank arches. Above the door is a tripartite arched window, and all doors and windows have hood moulds. Most openings include slender shafts with scalloped capitals. The side elevations have five round-headed cast iron casements. Inside, there are four wooden roof trusses and a six-column rear gallery. The stained glass windows, depicting the ascension, were designed by the Dowager Marchioness of Waterford and made by Hughes in 1865. An extension was added to the north in 1983-1984.
