Description
The Grange is a house that has central and rear parts dating from the 17th century or earlier, with renovations and extensions added in the mid to late 19th century. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast, with plastered brick casing on the ground floor. The northern front has brick extensions and is also roughcast, while the eastern end is painted brickwork. It has a steep old red tile roof and is L-shaped, facing north, with the older part running north-south and a crosswing at the rear to the south. There is a large rear sidewall chimney on the crosswing. The 19th-century west wing is two stories with a parallel roof, featuring an entrance and two sash windows on the first floor, each with 2/2 panes. The old part has a canted bay window on its northern gable end, and a gabled two-story 19th-century wing projects to the east from its northern end. The openings of the sash windows have chamfered lintels, and the gables of the 19th-century extensions display stepped brackets on the ridge, purlins, and wall-plates. The Grange was formerly known as Blakes Farm and is mentioned in the Court Rolls of the manor as Blakes in 1472.
