Description
A block of six estate houses, now private residences, was built in 1871 for C.W. Wilshere, the Lord of the Manor. The houses enclose the north side of the Green in Great Wymondley. Constructed of red brick, they feature steep-pitched, handmade red tile roofs with bands of scalloped tiles, and extended catslide roofs to single-storey outshuts at the rear. The houses form a long, two-storey block with double-fronted facades, facing south. Each house is planned with a central entrance, end chimneys, and especially large chimney stacks at the ends of the overall block. A boxed water pump stands at the west gable end. The houses are symmetrical, with three windows wide, and feature casement windows. Pointed relieving arches are above the ground-floor windows, and segmental arches over the doors. The houses were formerly known as Golden Row. They are included on the list for their group value.
